When an AI assistant recommends a competitor instead of your company, the cause is usually not random. The system may be unable to access your site, understand what you offer, find a quotable answer or confirm that your brand is a real and consistent entity.
Reason 1: AI crawlers cannot access the site
Overly broad `robots.txt` rules, security services and bot-blocking plugins can prevent answer engines from reading public pages. Review the rules for public content separately from private areas.
Keep administration, account and API paths protected. At the same time, make an explicit decision about public service, product and editorial pages. Check actual server logs where possible; a configuration that looks correct may still be blocked by a firewall.
Reason 2: the page never answers the question directly
A page can contain the right topic but still be difficult to cite. Long introductions, vague claims and marketing language force a model to infer the answer.
Improve citation readiness by:
- answering the main question in the first paragraph;
- using question-based headings;
- adding comparison tables and concise lists;
- naming technologies, locations, dates and deliverables precisely;
- keeping each key paragraph understandable without surrounding context.
Reason 3: the organization is unclear
AI systems connect information about a company across websites. If the company name, address, description or domain differs between the website, social profiles, GitHub and directories, the system may treat them as separate entities.
Use a consistent official name and short brand name. Add dynamic `Organization` or `LocalBusiness` structured data and keep the same verified profile links in `sameAs`.
Reason 4: there is no first-hand evidence
Statements such as “we provide high-quality solutions” do not help a model distinguish one supplier from another. Real projects do.
Describe the problem, implementation, technology choices and result. A portfolio item that explains how a workflow was automated is stronger than a gallery containing only screenshots. Customer reviews can support trust when they are published with appropriate consent and privacy controls.
Reason 5: the site has little external confirmation
Your own website is only one source. Consistent professional profiles, marketplace work, directory listings, GitHub projects and relevant mentions help confirm that the organization exists and works in the stated field.
This does not mean creating large numbers of low-quality links. A small number of accurate, maintained sources is more useful than inconsistent mass listings.
A 15-minute diagnostic
1. Open the public service page without authentication.
2. Review `robots.txt` and test relevant crawler user agents.
3. Search the page for a one-paragraph definition of the service.
4. Validate `Organization`, `Service` and breadcrumb structured data.
5. Compare the name and description with major external profiles.
6. Ask the same commercial question in several AI tools and record the cited competitors.
The competitor sources reveal the information format the answer engine currently trusts. Do not copy them; identify what they explain clearly that your page omits.
Frequently asked questions
Can a company pay ChatGPT to be recommended organically?
Organic source selection is not a guaranteed placement product. Advertising products and organic citations are different systems. Focus on accessibility, evidence and useful answers rather than promises of guaranteed inclusion.
How long does improvement take?
Technical corrections can be published immediately, but recrawling and source reassessment take time. Measure monthly instead of expecting a stable result after one test.
Is structured data enough?
No. Structured data describes a page; it cannot compensate for thin content, missing evidence or an inaccessible site.
